Medium - Australian recycled pure copper uncoated and recovered beads from discarded jewellery being handmade Kazuri beads from Kenya.
My mother and I were mostly opposites, however, it is only now that my mother has passed, that I realise that all of those differences actually impact who I am and it’s my choice if they impact in a positive way.
As I was rummaging through my mother’s items, I found a green Kazuri bead necklace that she would often wear. I sat it with my orange Kazuri Beads. Our opposite favourite colours together. We both loved black and white, so when I found a Kazuri necklace in an op shop to complete the story, I was thrilled.
Together, these necklaces have sat around, inspiring other works while I decide how they should be worked together.
This piece represents the foundation a mother creates, deep down in our subconscious at times, to allow us to create freely, even if only connected by a small mutual interest.
It is a reminder that differences can be beautiful, and with only a small common link, we can use our differences to learn and inspire.
